Why has my veterinarian prescribed this medicine?

Artificial tears are tear substitutes used to moisten and lubricate the eyes when the animal's tear secretion has stopped or is reduced as in keratoconjunctivitis sicca (dry eye syndrome). There are different agents that are used as artificial tears such as carbomers, hypromellose and polyvinyl alcohol. Some animals appear to respond better to one substance rather than another. Your veterinarian may need to try different preparations to find the most satisfactory for your pet. Your veterinarian will need to monitor your pet's response to treatment.

Artificial tear preparations are not available as veterinary preparations, but veterinarians are permitted to administer human formulations to dogs and cats.

How do I give this medication?

- Give this medication to your pet as directed by your veterinarian. READ THE LABEL CAREFULLY.

- Your veterinarian will show you how to apply the medication to your pet's eyes.

- Artificial tear preparations will have to be applied several times a day; the frequency of administration will depend on the severity of the condition in your pet.

- Your pet may also need other eye medication. Your veterinarian will advise you on the time interval between applying different treatment to your pet's eyes.

- Try to give this medication at about the same time(s) each day and try not to miss giving any doses.

- DO NOT give the pet more medicine than directed and DO NOT give the medicine more often than directed.

- DO NOT stop giving this medication without consulting your veterinarian. Contact your veterinarian in advance if your pet requires a repeat prescription.

How do I store this medicine?

Keep this medicine out of reach of children. Store this medicine in a cool, dry place at room temperature. Store away from heat and direct sunlight. Do not store this medicine in the bathroom, near the kitchen sink or in damp places. The medicine may break down if exposed to heat or moisture.

Potential side effects

- There are very few side effects when artificial tears are given at the usual dose. If you notice anything unusual, contact your veterinarian.

Possible drug interactions

- Make sure to tell your veterinarian what other medication you are giving to your pet.

- Quite often your veterinarian may prescribe two different medications, and a drug interaction may be anticipated. In this case, your veterinarian may vary the dose and/or monitor your pet more closely.

- Contact your veterinarian if your pet experiences any unusual reactions when different medications are given together.
