Delmadinone Acetate
Why has my veterinarian prescribed this medicine?
Delmadinone acetate is a progestogen that reduces the production of the hormone testosterone. The drug is used for certain behavioural problems such as some forms of aggression, nervousness, and hypersexuality (roaming and mounting) in male dogs. If such behaviour is sexually motivated, the effect of administration of delmadinone acetate may help to decide whether surgical castration would be effective to stop the behaviour. However, delmadinone acetate also acts on the area of the brain that controls behaviour and reduced aggression after administration of delmadinone is no guarantee that surgical castration will have the same effect. Delmadinone acetate is also used for treatment of enlarged prostate gland and anal tumours.
How do I give this medication?
- Your veterinarian will administer delmadinone acetate by injection to your pet.
- There may be a change in the colour of the fur at the injection site.
- The effect of the treatment will not be seen before 2 to 4 days after the injection.
Potential side effects
- Although a drug has potential side effects, it does not mean that there is necessarily a high risk of any of these occurring.
- Your pet may experience a reduction in fertility and libido for a short time. Contact your veterinarianif the problem persists.
- Side effects may include increased appetite, increased thirst, and increased urination. Sometimes increased aggression is seen. If these effects continue and become troublesome, contact your veterinarian.
- Other side effects may occur. If you notice anything unusual, contact your veterinarian.
Possible drug interactions
- Make sure to tell your veterinarianwhat other medication you are giving to your pet.
- Quite often your veterinarian may prescribe two different medications, and a drug interaction may be anticipated. In this case, your veterinarian may vary the dose and/or monitor your pet more closely.
- Drugs may interact such that they can cause an increased or decreased effect or side effects. Although drug interactions may occur, it does not mean that there is necessarily a high risk of any of these occurring. The risk of serious drug interactions is low and should be kept in perspective.
- Contact your veterinarianif your pet experiences any unusual reactions when different medications are given together.
